Who builds custom business software in the UK?
Short answer
Custom business software in the UK is built by three kinds of supplier: large consultancies, mid-sized development agencies, and small studios or independent developers. Small firms suit small-business budgets best, provided they host and support what they build. GSUK is a UK studio that designs, builds and hosts bespoke systems on its own servers in Britain.
The three kinds of supplier
- Large consultancies. Genuine capability at scale, with process and governance to match. Priced for enterprise budgets and rarely interested below a certain project size.
- Development agencies. The middle of the market — teams of ten to a hundred, project managers, defined delivery process. Capable, but you may be a small account, and the people who sold the work often aren't the people who do it.
- Small studios and independents. You deal with the builders directly, decisions are quick and the price suits a small business. The risk is capacity and continuity, which is worth asking about openly.

- Who exactly will write this, and will I be able to speak to them?
- Show me something live you built that has been running for over a year.
- Who owns the data, and can I export all of it, in full, whenever I like?
- Where is it hosted, and who maintains that server?
- What is the monthly cost after launch, and what does it include?
- What does a change cost once we're live?
- What happens if you're unavailable — who else can support this?
Warning signs
A fixed price before any scoping. Vagueness about who owns the data. A portfolio of mockups rather than live URLs you can visit. Pressure to sign this week. And a proposal full of technology names but silent on how your business actually works — which usually means nobody has asked.

Can someone build custom software for my business?
Almost certainly, and the useful question is whether they should. A good supplier will tell you when an off-the-shelf product genuinely does the job, because a bespoke build sold to someone who didn't need it is a bad reference forever.
Should I use a UK developer or go offshore?
Offshore day rates are lower; total cost often isn't, once you count specification effort, rework and time zones. A UK supplier is easier when the software runs the business day to day and someone has to answer at 8am on a Monday.
Do I need a technical person on my side?
It helps but isn't required. What matters far more is that you can describe how your business works in detail. That is the input the build actually depends on.
